As you tackle projects in and around your home this summer, remember that you can do things to help your home retain heat and be more efficient in a number of areas. Here are three ideas for better heat efficiency that you can get done this summer.
Windows and doors seals: Check, fix or replace broken seals around doors and windows. It costs enough to heat or air condition a place, you certainly don’t need it going out the window. Not only do quality seals help with efficiency, but they also block out unwanted moisture and insects. Who wants a beetle invasion in the spring or fall?
Clean duct work, vent covers, and air filters: The harder your furnace/air conditioner fan has to work the less efficient it can be. Not only does cleaning out your duct work and changing the air filters help improve air quality in your home, it helps with heat efficiency as air circulates and the fan doesn’t have to work as hard.
Clean pellet stove/fireplace vents: Your pellet stove vents need to be cleaned inside and outside your home, and both the clean air return and exhaust vents need your attention. While you may have already cleaned them for the season, check to make sure bushes and shrubs haven’t grown up and blocked your vents. Don’t assume that there isn’t any growth or obstructions; take advantage of the warm weather and hedge clipper and remove anything that may block fresh air intake or exhaust later.
